We regret to inform everyone that we have had to cancel the 2020 event. After many attempts to get into contact with USATF to confirm our sanction/insurance status we have been unable to do so. As noted below, without insurance we cannot hold the event. Insurance is required by the State of Indiana to hold an organized event on State property, and is also something needed to protect organizers, sponsors, volunteers and participants.
We sincerely apologize for such a last-minute cancellation as we are well aware of the hard work and planning that goes into preparing for such events. We did not want to prematurely cancel and continued to work hard to keep the event on the schedule until the point that we could no longer wait.
Please join us next year for the 2021 event to be held on 09/19/2021.
After much discussion with park staff, we decided to keep the 2020 Honest Abe Trail Run as an in-person event. That said, the format would be very different as we plan to do virtually everything we can to follow CDC guidelines and appropriate social distancing measures. Our plan is to do everything we can to protect participants, organizers, volunteers, and park staff. Here is a quick rundown of some things to expect if you plan to participate…
There will be NO volunteers on site. There will be NO food or beverage provided, shy of a water cooler at the midpoint aid station. NO cups will be provided, just a water cooler and a hand sanitizer dispenser. Participants will be required to carry their own water receptacle for refilling and are asked to please sanitize their hands before doing so. There WILL still be one portable toilet near the start/finish line and we WILL provide a hand sanitizer dispenser by the toilet. There will be NOT be a common start time.
The course will be set up the evening of Friday, September 18th, and early morning Saturday, September 19th. Participants will be free to start their event at or after 8:00am central on Saturday or Sunday, September 19th or 20th. You must have completed your event no later than 7:00pm central on Saturday or Sunday. If you begin your event prior to 8:00am on either day, or finish later than 7:00pm either day you will not be considered to have been a part of the Honest Abe, but rather a voluntary non-event-affiliated park visitor. This is to be a USATF sanctioned and insured event and we cannot be held responsible for anyone who does not comply with the rules set forth. There will be official event results posted to the website, but there will be no place awards.
The race director will be around the park as much as possible over the course of the weekend. If you are a marathoner and have a reasonable idea of when you’ll be finishing please let the RD know and he will try to be on site to give you your finisher’s memento. All other marathon finishers will be mailed their memento after submitting results.
ALL THAT SAID, as this update is being typed up on 8/30/20 we have been having difficulty getting direct and documented answers from the USATF as to whether our current sanction and insurance will be honored with the event format having changed. If we cannot get answers this week we will have no choice but to cancel the event. It cannot take place without insurance; however, if we can get confirmation of insurance this week we will proceed as described above.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we try our best to hold the event this year.
